The French embassy and India’s foreign office have not confirmed the news

NEW DELHI: Carla Bruni may come to India and pose for a romantic picture with boyfriend French president Nicholas Sarkozy on Saturday.

A news report that the former super model will be accompanying the President to Agra when he takes a flight tomorrow after Republic Day parade is over, has sent reporters into a frenzy.

However neither the Indian foreign office or the French embassy are confirming the PTI report, which quotes unmanned official sources in saying she is coming.  The president is scheduled to leave for Agra at 12.30 pm from the technical area of Palam and arrive at the Taj by 1.40 pm. He returns to Delhi by 3:47 pm to attend the president’s reception. Later, he leaves for Paris.

Ever since the centre had said that the President will go to the Taj, speculation was that he would not go there without Bruni. The fear that she would steal the thunder from Sarozy’s first visit to India will be allayed as she would only be there for the Agra leg of the trip.

Bruni is not the only lady worrying the Indian government. Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen’s wish to meet President Sarkozy was in fact a much more serious issue. India has firmly told the French that New Delhi will not allow Nasreen to receive the Simone de Beauvoir award from President Sarkozy on Indian soil. The French had earlier announced that she would be honoured with the highest award for women writers given by France. The author now being kept under 24-hour guard at an undisclosed location in the capital, had expressed a wish to receive the award from Sarkozy himself.

After India’s refusal, the French has said they would be happy to give the award to Nasreen in Paris. Senior Indian officials had made it clear that Nasreen, who has irked Muslims with her writing against Islam, will not be honoured by the French in India. “She should receive the award either in Paris or in Dhakam,’’ an official said.
