MSSA announces the Boost Cricket Cup,  an U-17 Inter-City school competition

MUMBAI: The Mumbai School Sports Association announced on Tuesday night the launch of the Boost Cricket Cup, a new initiative for inter-city Under-17 cricket.

The competition, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and promoted by Procam International, involves young cricketers from eight different centres throughout India competing in local and then national events.

The intra-City events in the Boost Cup have already been completed in Bangalore, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Delhi and Hyderabad, and the Mumbai leg is the final one until the top players from each centre begin to compete against each other.

The 30 teams from Mumbai will consist of schools to have qualified in the Elite Group of the Harris and Giles Shields, as well as six supplementary teams from the Thane district.

Once the winning team from the 30 who are competing in Mumbai has been established, they will travel to Bangalore for the Boost Cricket Inter-City Challenge to be played in Bangalore between April 13th and 18th 2008.

The philosophy behind the competition is simple, according to Glaxo general manager TS Dayanand. “There is a lot of talent in schools,” he said. “We are proud to make
Boost Cricket Cup a fitting platform for budding cricketers to showcase their talents.”

This chance to grab the spotlight is accompanied as a prize by a Rs 18,000 award for the winning team, and Rs.12,000 for the runners up.

Twenty of the leading players in the Inter-City competition will be chosen to attend a seven-day training camp led by leading ex-cricketers, and from these five will be chosen for scholarships as ‘ratnas.’
