More than 70 Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) scheme residents made for their local Irla

Nallah on Saturday, demanding the eviction of TRIG Securities, the head office of which is situated on the structure on the mouth of the nallah. The residents are upset that instead of following the orders of the divisional commissioner (Konkan region) to demolish the office, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation

(BMC) has made the security men clean-up marshals of the region. However, TRIG officials disclaim any responsibility for moving it.

In October 2007, a delegation of JVPD residents had approached Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh asking for the removal of illegal slum encroachments on the nallah. The CM had given an assurance that this would be done immediately after the monsoons.

Ten days ago, all slums were cleared from the nallah, except for TRIG Securities, which has encroached upon 5,000 sq ft. Swaran Salaria, chairman and managing director of TRIG, made an appeal before the administrator and divisional commissioner, Konkan division, Sreekant Singh, to repeal the order passed by the deputy collector (encroachment removal) on May 25, 2007, directing the removal of his commercial structure while terming it as an encroachment.

Singh rejected his appeal and passed an order on January 10, 2008, directing the deputy collector to remove the encroachment of the commercial structure within 24 hours.

The irony is that nine days have passed since the order and TRIG Securities office continues to operate.

When Swaran Salaria, chairman and managing director of TRIG Securities was contacted, he said, “The structure doesn’t belong to me and I’ve not purchased the plot. It belongs to Raman Balan Panikar, the owner. It’s been approved by the authority who issued us a photopass.”

Salaria further added, “The commercial license was issued in 1972 and we got the permission for the structure in 1991. Has it become illegal only because the TRIG office is located there? ”

“We managed to evict slum dwellers who lost their houses. Why should we spare a commercial structure?” said Anuradha Sanghvi, a JVPD resident. Housewives from JVPD informed that TRIG double parked in the area which posed a hindrance to the Utpal Sanghvi School students.

“A teacher suffered an accident due to the vehicles that are parked outside the office,” said Amit Mehta, an area sabha representative of the locality.
