The watchman at Hotel Shiv Sagar, Churchgate, who was shot on Monday night, died at the St George Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Inspector Sanjay Amrute of the Marine Drive police station said Bishweshwar Mandal, 40, was on duty at the hotel at 10:30pm when somebody shot him from close range.
The bullet hit him in the right side of his chest and he collapsed in a pool of blood.
On hearing the gunshot, customers and hotel staff rushed outside to find Mandal lying on the ground. He was rushed to St George Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.
Police have registered a case of murder. They collected an empty cartridge from the site and sent it for a ballistic report. But they have no other clues or a motive for the murder. Mandal’s corpse has been sent for a post-mortem.
Shambhu Mandal, 32, younger brother of the diseased, was told of the incident at 7:30am on Tuesday. “My brother joined Lord Security Service 15 days ago,” he said. Prior to this, Bishweshwar was working on the family’s farm in his native village in
Madhubani district in Bihar.
Eldest of five siblings, Bishweshwar dropped out of school after Standard IX. He is survived by his wife and three minor children, including a daughter, back home.
Shambhu, a peon in a private company at Nariman Point, collected the corpse and will perform the last rites in Mumbai.
Hotel manager Prakash Shetty refused to discuss the incident. But a police officer, who did not want to be identified, said gangster Bacchi Pande had demanded money from the hotel’s owner a few days ago.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone I) Brijesh Singh said, “I heard about the extortion threat. But the owner did not lodge a complaint. I don’t know which gang threatened him and how much money was demanded. But we have provided security to the owner after this shooting.”
