The Matunga police arrested four people, including a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, for allegedly kidnapping a man who they say cheated them of Rs2lakh on Friday.

The man had allegedly taken money from one of the accused as payment for a government job for his son with the Indian Railways.

The accused have been identified as Balu Gund, 49, Babasaheb Pawar, 32, Yashwant Chavan 31 and constable Suryakant Jawalkote, 45, and have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Dadar on Saturday.

Police inspector Pramod Koparde of Matunga police station said: “Jawalkote is a police constable attached to the RPF office at Kurla, while the others are farmers who hail from Solapur.”

The man who was kidnapped has been identified as Indraneel alias Mintoo Roy, 42 — a resident of Shahu Nagar in Dharavi, and a notorious history sheeter. Koparde said: “As many as 11 cases including molestation, cheating and assault are registered against him at the Matunga police station alone.”

Roy had allegedly taken Rs2 lakh from Gund in 2006 and promised to get his son a job as a Class IV employee in the Indian Railways.

Roy then took Gund and his son to Delhi where they stayed for eight days in connection with the job. On their return, Roy avoided Gund and gave him evasive answers regarding his son’s employment prospects.

When Gund realised that he had been cheated, he decided to teach Roy a lesson and on January 3, along with five others, cornered Roy in Matunga.

They took him to Dadar station where they boarded the Nandigram Express and got off at Kalyan. When Roy realised that he was trapped by six people, he alerted his mother, Gillu Roy, via a text message: “I am being taken to Kalyan. I may be in trouble.”

His mother contacted the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police ( Zone-IV) B Ramanand, who in turn directed the Matunga police to investigate the matter. The mobile phones of Roy and his mother were kept under surveillance and this helped the police nab the accused at Dadar.

The victim Roy has claimed that he had not taken a single rupee from Gund. The police are hunting for the other two conspirators.
