Latter to represent it on licensing, promos, merchandising, other plans

MUMBAI: Marvel Entertainment International has entered into a pact with Kids Media India, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Spacetoon Media, to tap the Indian market.

Kids Media will represent Marvel on its licensing, merchandising, publishing and promotional programmes in the country.

Spiderman, X-Men, The Hulk, Iron Man, Ghost Rider and Captain America are among Marvel properties.

Simon J Philips, president, Marvel Entertainment International, told DNA Money: “The potential market size of 70 million people is bigger than the consumer base in any European market. In terms of money, indications are that the market is worth $25 million. I actually think that it could be more than that.”

Rajiv Sangri, MD and CEO, Kids Media India, said: “We had a B2B meet where we met Indian companies interested in working with us. In the first year, we expect to close 10-12 licensing deals generating around Rs 25 crore.”

The merchandising and licensing scene, especially in the kids market, has been quite active over that past few months.

Other international players in this segment include Disney and Cartoon Network. Marvel had earlier marketed its Spiderman 3 movie merchandise in India which it claims did well.

The company also indicated it will launch a localised version of its website in a few months. It may be recalled that Spiderman comics had earlier been released in an Indian avatar.

Marvel is also sourcing animation from Indian studios like DQ Entertainment and Toonz Animation. Simon Philips added the company was extremely satisfied with the work coming out of India.
