North Block begins hunt for new Sebi chief

With M Damodaran’s tenure as chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) coming to an end in February, the ministry of finance has started the headhunt for the high-profile job.

Two whole-time members are also completing tenure

MUMBAI: With M Damodaran’s tenure as chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) coming to an end in February, the ministry of finance has started the headhunt for the high-profile job.

Two whole-time members of Sebi, VK Chopra and G Anantharaman, are also completing their tenure.

As per Sebi service rules, the top officials cannot hold office for more than three years.
While Damodaran and Anantharaman are completing their tenures, Chopra has to step down as he will attain superannuation in March.

Damodaran took charge as Sebi chairman in February 2005. An IAS officer, he landed the high-profile job after his successful stints as chairman of IDBI and UTI.

Anantharaman joined Sebi as whole-time member in December 2004. He is in charge of investigations, surveillance, market regulations and derivatives functions.

He belongs to the Indian Revenue Services (Income Tax) and held several positions relating to the investigation of complex tax fraud cases including Foreign Exchange Regulation Act cases.

Though he completes three years on December 15, he recently got a three- month extension.

VK Chopra, who is in charge of market intermediaries and investor assistance and education, RTI appeals and general services, is superannuating on March 22, 2008.

The department of economic affairs has, in a communiqué addressed to the presidents of ICSI and ICAI dated November 29, called for interested candidates to apply for the posts of chairman and two whole-time directors of Sebi in Mumbai.

The last date for application is December 15, the department said.
