KOHIMA: Goa Governor S C Jamir escaped an attempt on his life for the fourth time since 1993 near his home town Mokokchung, about 160-kms from here, on Saturday.

Unidentified gunmen fired at the convoy of the longest-serving former chief minister of Nagaland who was proceeding towards Dimapur via Assam at a place between Mokokchung town and Changki village, police said.

The personal security escorting Jamir retaliated immediately and in the exchange of fire, a securityman was injured.

This is the fourth time Jamir had a providential escape since 1993 when the Naga strongman was seriously wounded in an attack at Nagaland House, New Delhi.

Another abortive attempt on his life was made in Kohima town in 1995. In 1999, he escaped once again an ambush carried out at a place 30-kms from Kohima. Two members of his personal security were killed in the attack.

The NSCN-IM on September 25 this year had declared Jamir as "anti-people and anti-national" and barred him from entering his home state.
