MELBOURNE: Adam Gilchrist pipped legendary Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting to receive the honour of Australia's greatest ever one-day international cricketer after securing highest number of votes in a players' poll.

Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) in collaboration with Cricket Australia had invited all 163 players, who have represented Australia in one-day cricket, to vote.

"In total, 110 players took the opportunity to vote and Gilchirst topped the chart with 38 per cent of votes followed by Ponting (19 percent) and Steve Waugh (14 percent)," a Cricket Australia press release said.

Gilchrist received the honour at an ACA function at Bellerive Oval in Hobart today and described the moment as unbelievable.

"To be given this enormous honour by my peers is unbelievably humbling and ranks highly amongst the accolades I have received over my career," Gilchrist said.

"I have been very fortunate to have played in such a successful era and with such a great group of players. I feel very fortunate to be acknowledged in this way," Gilchrist, who was part of three World Cup winning sides, added.

Test-wicket World record holder Shane Warne comes at number four with nine percent of votes and is followed by Michael Bevan (7), Dean Jones (5), Allan Border (4) Mark Waugh (2) Craig McDermott (1) and Andrew Symonds (1).

The player vote was conducted as part of the celebration of one-day cricket event held in February this year when Australia's greatest ever ODI team was also announced.

James Sutherland, Cricket Australia CEO paid rich tribute to the flamboyant wicket-keeper batsman.

"Australian cricket congratulates Adam Gilchrist on being named this country's best-ever one-day international player," Sutherland said.

"Recognition by his peers is a fitting accolade for a player that has performed at an exceptional level for the past decade. Adam has thrilled and inspired Australian cricket fans with his attacking batting, slick glove work, positive attitude and sportsmanship."
