DGP PS Pasricha has ordered the preparation of a list of taxi drivers engaged in BPO firms

MUMBAI: There were mixed reactions from drivers, employed with business process outsourcing (BPO) companies for ferrying employees from home to office and back, to the Maharashtra police’s decision of preparing a database of such drivers in a bid to restrain their tendancy for crime.

The decision to prepare a database of the drivers hired by BPO firms in the state was taken by the director general of police Dr PS Pasricha on Monday after a 21-year-old BPO employee in Pune was allegedly raped and murdered by a cab driver and his accomplice on early Friday morning.

“We are aware of the Pune’s alleged rape and murder incident. The incident has brought shame on driver community. The database of taxi drivers would certainly help the BPO companies as well as the police to keep a tab on the drivers. This would also create a fear among the drivers that if they indulged in indecent or illegal activities, they could be caught,” said Prabhakar Lad, a taxi driver with a Lower Parel-based BPO.

Critics of the police move said that the initiative would not last long, since it is not possible for the police to keep database of every single driver working for a BPO company.

“Drivers are known for switching jobs. What about those drivers who come from other states, they do not even have their permanent address? How will the police get to know their criminal background and from where? How will the police tackle such issues?” asked Ramesh Patil, a driver employed with a Malad-based BPO.

Another driver Suresh Jadhav said, “Just because one driver has committed such a heinous crime, doesn’t mean that all the drivers working with BPO companies or any other business firms are criminal. This initiative of the police to keep the database of drivers would not last long.”
