LONDON: Mohan Kaul, director-general of the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC), will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Cape Breton University in Sydney NS, Canada, on Friday.

Kaul was appointed director-general of the CBC by Britain's former Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1997.

In a statement, the university said, "The Cape Breton University is distinctly honoured to celebrate the career of Dr Mohan Kaul, a commonwealth leader and visionary who has made it his duty to make a difference to countries all over the world through the empowerment of individuals.

"The university confers the degree Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, to a man who is a stellar example of a person who has the best interests of a united and sustainable world economy at heart and who lives his life with a dedication and commitment to success that others can model."

Since the establishment of the CBC by commonwealth heads of government in 1997, intra-commonwealth trade has expanded from $2 trillion to $3 trillion, a CBC statement here said. Investment flows had crossed $180 billion.

The statement added that commonwealth trade and investment now accounted for over 20 percent of the world total. Business transactions between companies in commonwealth countries were 10 to 20 per cent cheaper, due to the 'commonwealth factor' of common language, institutions and business systems.

Kaul, who is contesting for the position of secretary-general of the commonwealth and has support from many heads of government, said, "I am glad that my role in promoting good governance in the commonwealth countries has been recognised.

"The Cape Breton University is particularly involved in building educational and business links between India and Canada, which is of particular interest to me."

The CBC is meant to involve the private sector more fully in the promotion of trade and investment for shared prosperity. It represents 53 commonwealth nations, including developed economies such as Britain, Singapore, Canada and developing countries such as India and Malaysia.
