KOLKATA: More than a month has passed since the unnatural death of the computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman, but the investigation has apparently not been able to zero in on any specific cause yet even as the probe has been taken over by the CBI from state CID.

The mystery over the death of Rizwanur (30), whose body was found at a rail track on September 21, barely a month after he married Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, is not yet over, as investigators try to find out if it was a case of suicide, murder or accident.

As an embarrassed West Bengal Government faced a massive public outcry over alleged police involvement in the case, five top police officers, including the Kolkata police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee were removed.

Buckling under pressure, particularly after the High Court order asking for a CBI probe, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee withdrew CID from the case. The state government had, in the meanwhile, ordered a judicial probe with Justice (retd) Alok Ranjan Chakraborty heading the commission of inquiry.

The Chief Minister later withdrew the judicial probe and that too after Rizwanur's mother Keshwar Jehan and elder brother Ruqbanur petitioned before the High Court questioning the continuation of the judicial probe when CBI was already on the job.

The Chief Minister refused to accept that his government was jolted due to pressure from public and from his own party as also from some Left Front partners and opposition parties too, that he was changing his decision 'every now and then'.

"We have taken cognizance of the public sentiment and it has nothing to do with the vacillation," he said.

Bhattacharjee was of the view that when Rizwanur's family was for CBI probe into the case, "his government will not like to continue the judicial inquiry."

The city police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, who is also CAB president, had to go by an order of the Chief Minister as his name was involved in the case that the police had resorted to 'mental torture' on Rizwanur ever since he married the Hindu girl.

The issue generated such a massive public outcry that the Chief Minister himself faced an angry crowd when he visited Rizwanur's mother at their Tiljala road residence recently.

The CBI has been grilling several persons, examining  the call lists of Rizwanur's mobile phone, checking bank lockers of the family, collecting financial papers of the Todi, probing allegations of money transfer.

The sleuths have already cross-examined Rizwanur's wife Priyanka, her mother Bimala, uncle Pradip Todi, besides meeting the deceased youth's mother and other family members.

The tight-lipped sleuths have not yet come out with any indication if they have achieved any breakthrough into the case.
