MUMBAI: Three-year-old Unnati Tripathi died on Thursday when she, along with her parents and a few others, were hit by a speeding train between Goregaon and Jogeshwari.

Manju Akhtar, 37, Nirmala Tripathi, 48, were seriously injured in the same accident and were admitted to Bhagwati Hospital. The accident led to an agitation by local people, disrupting the Western Railway services for over an hour. Agitated people staged rail roko and also pelted stones, injuring a guard of Churchgate-bound local.

It took over an hour (from 7.45 pm to 8.48 pm) for the railway authorities and the Government Railway Police (GRP) force to clear the agitated mob and resume the train services. Even after normalcy was restored, it took time for the rail management to clear the bunching of trains and operate the train services as per schedule. There are over 25,000 level crossing in the country. The one where the accident took place on Thursday is death-level crossing gate number 27.
