1992 riots: 15 people get the same punishment

KANPUR: Fifteen persons were sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a Kanpur court in the 1992 riots case. The riots rocked the city in the aftermath of Babri Masjid demolition.

The court, on Tuesday, had convicted 15 persons of murder and other crimes during riots following the destruction of a disputed mosque in December 1992. The defendants were found guilty of burning 11 to death.

Eleven Muslims killed in the Govind Nagar area of Kanpur were burnt to death by a mob on 10 December 1992. Two of those killed were a women and
a child.

In all, 25 people were accused of crimes in the case ranging from rioting and arson to murder. One defendant died during the trial which went on for almost 15 years. The other nine defendants were acquitted.
