“I was sure that I would be able to give something new to ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007’ (Zee). Of course, there were apprehensions because I am young. The channel too was in two minds. The first thing they asked me was whether I could speak good Hindi (laughs). And my music background helped.”
The mega finalists
“I am all for the top three contestants-Raja Hasan, Amanat Ali and Aneek Dhar. They have been handpicked by judges Asha Bhosle, Ghulam Ali and Khayyam. I am good friends with all of them. In fact, when I saw that Amanat was getting fewer votes because he lacked charisma, I suggested a haircut that brought him many votes the next week itself.”
‘10 crore ka hero’
“It was very sweet of Ismailji (Durbar) to call me so. Himesh Reshammiya and he have been very supportive of me. I am open to film offers. But I would rather sit at home than do a multi-starrer or a small film. I don’t want to degrade myself?”
Lady-killer
“Of course, I was embarrassed when this girl from the audience came up and kissed me while we were shooting. It was uncomfortable because it was done in front of dignitaries. I have a young image as I sport spikes, cargoes, tees, khakis. But this is overwhelming to say the least. Yes, girls do ask me out on dates. Dad (singer Udit Narayan) is fine with it (laughs). He’s over the moon with my success.”
My friend Mouli
“A lot is being made about my friendship with Mouli Dave. For me, she’s just one of the many contestants in the show to whom I am attached. We are only good friends. In fact, she has a boyfriend to whom I have been introduced. So that should end the matter, hopefully.”
Album aspirations
“I am also working on my new album, which should be out soon. And unlike people’s expectations, it’s not a romantic album. It’s a fusion of the music I have heard and learnt over the years. I will also be writing a few of the compositions myself. I hope that this works for me; otherwise I will have to go back to commercial music - two songs and four remix albums!”
