KOLKATA: The central Intelligence Bureau has cautioned the West Bengal government and the state police’s Intelligence Branch (IB) of the sudden rise in the illegal border crossovers by a number of most-wanted Bangladeshi criminals during the last couple of weeks.

The intelligence agency suspects about 100 criminals have crossed the borders in the last week and majority of them are actively involved with international arms, narcotics and fake currency rackets. Most of these criminals have taken refuge at Kolkata or its adjoining suburbs.

According to highly-placed IB sources, the recent crackdown by the Bangladeshi police on the activities of these criminals is probably the reason why there has been a sudden rise in the illegal crossovers.

“During the last one month, the Bangladeshi police conducted successive crackdown drives on the different activities of criminals and many of their joints were completed shut down by the police. This probably have prompted many of them to cross borders and seek for a safer shelter in West Bengal,” a highly-placed IB official told DNA on the condtion of anonymity.

The intelligence agency has also secured information that some criminals have also been able to secure ration cards with the help of their contacts in West Bengal. Many have active links with the dreaded Islamic fundamentalist terrorist outfit, Hizbul Muzahideen.

According to IB sources, the criminals include close associates of Bangladeshi smuggling kingpins like Md Rafiq, Md Jamal and Md Zakeer among others. These smugglers are also sought after characters of the Interpol.
