Dell starts its first Indian manufacturing unit

NEW DELHI: World's largest computer maker, Dell Inc. kicked-off its first manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on Monday with an initial investment of about $30 million spread over five years.

The new facility would have an initial capacity of producing 40,000 desktop computers a year that constitute almost 75 per cent of the company's India business and then go on to make other products.

"The Chennai operation reaffirms the strategic importance of India to Dell, providing significant impetus to our growth plans and prospects here, where we are already among the fastest growing computer systems suppliers," said Rajan Anandan, vice president and general manager of Dell India.

He also said that the plant would help the company leverage its efforts in scouting for the number one position in India and substantially reduce costs and delivery time for its customers.

The India plant is the firm's third manufacturing location in the Asia-Pacific region, after China and Malaysia, and is part of Dell's global network of manufacturing facilities. 

The company marked the occasion by gifting it first ever India made desktop to Infosys, one of its largest clients in the country.
