US seen as the greatest ally or the biggest threat

SILICON VALLEY: Besides their neighbouring nations, people around the world, including India, often mention the United States as the closest ally or the greatest threat to their own countries.

US is cited more frequently by India than any other country as a dependable ally with 46 per cent, followed by 43 per cent viewing Russia as the top ally and Japan with 34 percent, a survey conducted by the Pew Global Attitudes Project said.

In terms of threats, Indian public cited Pakistan most often as a major threat, followed by Al Qaeda and China.

Despite the US government calling Pakistan as an ally in its war against terrorism, 64 percent of the Pakistani public view US as the greatest threat, followed by India and Israel.

The survey also found that Asian people feels their countries face threats from other countries in the region. Nearly half in Pakistan and Bangladesh say India poses a threat to their countries, while three-quarters of Indians express concerns about Pakistan.

People in 19 of the 47 countries surveyed cite the United States more often than any other nation as a dependable ally in the future.

At the same time, the US also is named more frequently than any other country as one of the greatest threats by 17 countries.

People in many predominately Muslim countries, Latin America, and China see the US as their greatest potential threat.

Two-thirds of Chinese (66%) and nearly as many in Turkey (64%) name US as the country that poses the greatest threat to their own country in the future.

Majorities in Venezuela (54%) and Argentina (52%) also view the United States as a potential threat, the study said.

A large majority of Muslims in Asia and the Middle East worry that the US could become a military threat to their countries with 93 per cent of Bangladeshis and 92 per cent of Moroccans saying they are worried that the US could someday pose a military threat to their nations.

Among the countries surveyed, Israelis are the most likely to consider the US among their country's most dependable allies.

Nearly nine-in-ten in Israel cite the US as a country that Israel can most rely on as a dependable ally in the future.
   
Three-quarters of South Koreans and nearly the same proportion of Japanese also name the US as a close ally, it said.
