The BJP-led Goa Democratic Alliance has said it will defeat the state government headed by the Congress, which was reduced to a minority late last night, in a trial of strength in the assembly this evening.
PANAJI: The BJP-led Goa Democratic Alliance has said it will defeat the state government headed by the Congress, which was reduced to a minority late last night, in a trial of strength in the assembly this evening.
"Governor SC Jamir is in Delhi and we have requested him to come back as soon as possible. We want him to install the new government once the existing government is defeated during the ongoing state assembly session," BJP leader Manohar Parrikar said.
The BJP-led formation, which comprises the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Save Goa Front (SGF), United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) and independent legislator Anil Salgaoncar, formed the Goa Democratic Front (GDA) earlier on Thursday to ensure close coordination between its partners.
The GDA unanimously elected Parrikar as its leader. Parrikar will be the chief minister if the formation manages to grab power.
"The Congress-led government is in a minority and it will be proved during the passing of finance demands in the House," Parrikar said, adding that Chief Minister Digamber Kamat would be defeated on the floor of the House.
"The Governor is likely to come here tomorrow as after dethroning the Kamat-led government, we have to be sworn in so that the financial demands can be passed," Parrikar said.
The GDA comprises 14 BJP legislators, two each from the MGP and SGF, one from the UGDP and an independent legislator.
Referring to the Congress-led coalition, Parrikar said, "In all they have 19 (MLAs), but the Speaker cannot vote until there is a tie. The government's toppling on the floor of the House is inevitable.
"The Governor has assured me (that he will) act as per the Constitution," he said.
