NEW DELHI: After accepting his defeat in the presidential poll, Bharion Singh Shekhawat on Saturday drove to Rashtrapati Bhavan in his personal car to hand over his resignation from the post of Vice-President.

Within minutes of the announcement of the victory of UPA- Left candidate Pratibha Patil, Shekhawat made up his mind to resign and sought an appointment with President A P J Abdul Kalam.

While seeking the appointment, Shekhawat's office made it clear to the Presidential Secretariat that he would be coming in his personal car and not the official vehicle.

In his brief resignation letter, the Vice President thanked Kalam for his cooperation and guidance.

"I hereby tender my resignation from the post of Vice President of India and am extremely grateful to you for the cooperation and guidance that I have always got from you," Shekhawat wrote.

Earlier, as news came in that Patil had won the election, the 84-year-old NDA-backed independent candidate issued a statement saying he accepted his defeat with "all humility".

He telephoned Patil to congratulate the UPA-Left nominee, who defeated him by a huge margin of over three lakh vote value in the electoral college of around ten lakh.

In the statement, he said he would continue to "work for the uplift of poor and deprived sections of the society so that they can enjoy their fundamental rights with dignity".

After resigning, Shekhawat gave up his official vehicle and returned from Rashtrapati Bhavan in his personal car.

He said after relinquishing the office of Vice-President, he would "work for the uplift of the poor and deprived sections of society so that they can enjoy their fundamental rights with dignity".
