The divorce settlement between the former Beatle and his wife — if it goes through — would be the largest in British legal history

LONDON: Heather Mills, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Sir Paul McCartney may get £70 million to remain silent about her four-year marriage to the former Beatle.

In a private divorce deal sorted out by the couple who split in May last year, it is believed that the former model-turned-activist will receive a lump sum of £15 million and another £3.5 million every year for the next 15 years upto when their daughter Beatrice turns 18.

The divorce settlement — which if it goes through would be the largest in British legal history — will include a clause to ensure that Mills does not speak publicly about what led to the breakdown of their marriage. In divorce papers leaked in October last year, 39-year-old Mills had accused Sir Paul of mentally and physically abusing her.

She has allegedly said her husband had assaulted her at least four times, even slashing her arm with a broken wine glass.

Mills accused the pop icon of being regularly drunk and smoking cannabis. Sir Paul is of course, very keen that Mills does not go public with such details of their marriage and hopes to buy her silence.

Mills on the other hands sees herself as the victim and wants her story told according to a friend. Mills, who posed for pornographic material in her younger days, has been called a gold-digger ever since her relationship with McCartney became public. The 65-year-old ex-Beatle is currently worth around £825 million and there has been speculation that Mills may receive anything from £200 million to nothing in the divorce.

The bitter split has been widely played out in the tabloids. Sir Paul, who shares joint access to his daughter with Mills though the three-year-old lives with her mother, will also pay for all of Beatrice’s living expenses, including her schooling, travel, nannies and security.

The legal process before the divorce is fully finalised may stretch out till next year. The case remains listed for a five-day hearing next February before a family High Court judge.
