When it comes to choices, CBSE and ICSE board students have options galore compared to their state board counterparts. Sana Suri, one of the high-scorers in the science stream of ICSE, with 96.33 per cent, has taken admission in the National University of Singapore  for a BSc in Genetics.

“I had applied to the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, but before that I got a seat at NUS for their four-year course. I plan to pursue a PhD in the same university after my graduation,” she said.

“City colleges don’t provide different options. You don’t get the choices that are available abroad. This is why I did not apply for a BSc in any of the colleges here,” she added.

Unlike Sana, many HSC toppers have opted for regular courses like BSc, BCom or professional courses like engineering or medicine. Sanajana Naik, who secured 94.67 per cent in her HSC exam, has applied for a BSc in Microbiology and also for Bachelors’ in Dental Surgery (BDS).

Several other toppers have similarly taken up regular courses or opted for an engineering degree.

“State board students are not exposed to different options whereas their counterparts in CBSE and ICSE have seminars and various career counselling sessions.

These students are also very well informed and have a goal in mind. Comparatively state board students tend to go in for conventional courses. They also tend to change their stream midway,” explains Kalyani Tandon, a career counsellor with a private company.

Whether state board students are well informed or not, the trend shows that they often walk the well trodden road.

“The colleges and schools should conduct regular career counselling sessions. This would help students make up their minds as well as ease the stress of admissions. Students will then apply for select courses and not for every course available,” added Tandon.
