MUMBAI: A heavy traffic blockade was reported on the Eastern Express Highway in neighbouring Thane area this morning due to a flash strike by octroi agents, police said.

Heavy vehicles were stranded initially as they were unable to enter Mumbai's suburb Mulund without the mandatory octroi checks which later resulted in the entire road being blocked, Thane police said.

The jam extended to a kilometre into the Thane city from the check post and additional traffic police personnel have been rushed to the spot, they added.

Octroi agents are on strike reportedly over the increase in vigilance by the authorities recently.

Thane comes under a separate Municipal Corporation and is a major entry point for vehicles coming from the northern routes into Mumbai.
