HELSINKI: Nokia, the Finnish manufacturer of mobile telephones, said on Monday it was taking new steps to prevent US microchip company Qualcomm from using its patents for mobile devices.
Nokia said it had filed a complaint with a court in Texas to uphold its rights to six patents that it alleged Qualcomm was using in technology for broadcasting television on mobile telephones and for applications such as video games.
Nokia said in a statement: "Qualcomm has in previous litigation sought injunctions against Nokia and therefore in this case Nokia is seeking both damages and injunctive relief.
"Nokia has a strong history of innovation in IP broadcast television and mobile download environments predating Qualcomm's activities," said Tero Ojanperä, chief technology officer, Nokia.
Referring to the two applications challenged by Nokia, he alleged: "This is another example where Qualcomm has effectively copied Nokia's innovations. We believe that, for MediaFLO to evolve and for BREW to remain viable, Qualcomm needs access to these and many other patented Nokia inventions."
Last week Qualcomm suffered a setback when the International Trade Commission ordered an embargo in the United States on new mobile telephones equipped with chips related to a standard known as CDMA.
Qualcomm invented CDMA, which figures in two years of claim and counter claim between Qualcomm and Nokia.
The CDMA standard has become dominant in the field of mobile telephony.
The International Trade Commission issued its ruling because new mobile telephones using related microchips breach a patent held by a rival group Broadcom.
