CHANDIGARH: BIS Chahal, media adviser to former chief minister Amarinder Singh, who wielded immense power during the Congress rule, was taken into custody by the Ludhiana police along with four other relatives for allegedly attempting to murder an 83-year-old man Harchand Singh last year.

Chahal was arrested with four others, which include Jagdish Singh, whose daughter is wedded to Chahal's son, his two brothers, Jupinder Singh and Harbhajan Singh, and their father Kartar Singh. Two grandsons of Kartar Singh are absconding.

In his complaint Harchand alleged that Chahal and his relatives had come to his three acres farmhouse in June last year and had fired shots in the air after manhandling him.
Harchand said the accused tried to kill him to capture his land worth crores of rupees in Daad village, on the outskirts of Ludhiana.

Chahal, incidentally, had taken blanket bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court last week for his arrest by the Vigilance Bureau. The bureau has named him as one of the 17 accused in the multi-crore Ludhiana City Centre scam, in which Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh are also co-accused.

Chahal, along with Raninder Singh, Amarinder's son-in-law Raminder Singh, was earlier grilled by the Vigilance Bureau for over four hours in Ludhiana. All three were called by the Vigilance Bureau after Amarinder was interrogated last week in Patiala.

As soon as his questioning by the VB was complete for the day, the Ludhiana police pounced on him and took him into custody.

Chahal, who had become an eyesore for the Parkash Singh Badal government, had earlier defied the high court twice when he did not return from abroad to present himself in a case of the controversial recruitment of DSPs during the Congress rule.
