ISLAMABAD: Two suspected militants were arrested by Pakistan Police, who were wanted for the 2002 kidnapping and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl, stated an official on Tuesday.
The two militants, Attaur Rehman and Faisal Bhatti were arrested on Monday in Kashmor, a town 500 kilometers northeast of Karachi, said a local police officer. They are alleged to be members of Lashar e Jhangvi, a militant organization with links to Al Quaida.
It was reported that the police seized them from a car containing explosives and weapons, which was traveling towards the Baluchistan province.
Pearl, who was researching a story on Islamic militancy was abducted from Karachi in January 2002 and his remains were later found in a shallow grave on the outskirts of the city. Pakistan, meanwhile, has already convicted several men for links to Pearl's murder.
British born Ahmed Omar Saeed Shaikh was give a death sentence in July 2002 and his three accomplices were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is alleged to be the number three man in Al Qaida's was caught in Pakistan and is currently imprisoned at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Pentagon transcripts state that Khalid Sheikh confessed that he personally beheaded Pearl.
