THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A pro-Left theatre group here has planned to stage a Malayalam play on former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, projecting him as an enduring symbol of anti-imperialist struggle.
"We have chosen Saddam Hussein as the subject of our first play as his life and sacrifices will be an inspiration for the generations to come," said Dinesan Pallath who wrote the play for the group 'Mudra--oruprathikarana Vedi.'
After tracing Saddam's story against the socio-political backdrop of West Asia, the play would end with the people of Iraq liberating themselves from the imperialist yoke, the group's production manager P C Mohanan told a press meet here.
The play would also remind the viewers of the critical role India could play in anti-imperialist struggle in today's world, he said.
Winner of the state award for the best drama actor, Sudarasanan would be doing the role of Saddam Hussein. American president George Bush, his strategists for Iraq policy and Indian leaders would also be appearing as characters.
The troupe's next play would be based on the life of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, they said.
