NEW DELHI: Terming the UPA government as "incompetent and directionless", its ally CPI on Tuesday accused the Congress of joining hands with Opposition BJP and planning to adjourn Parliament sine die a week before schedule.

"I am sorry that we (Left) have to support this government," senior party leader Gurudas Dasgupta told reporters, claiming that he had "come to know" that Parliament would be adjourned "tomorrow or day after" due to want of government business.

"In the past 20 years I have been in Parliament, I have never heard the government saying they have no business, especially after announcing that the Budget Session will go on till May 22," Dasgupta, who has shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the matter, said.

The resumption of the session was postponed by a week due to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and "now the government is curtailing even the remaining days", Dasgupta, whose party supports the UPA from outside, said.

This was after all parties, including the Congress and BJP, agreed at a meeting that Parliament should function for at least 100 days a year. As many as 19 hours were lost last week in Lok Sabha due to adjournments.

Accusing the government of being a "radarless, directionless and incompetent", he said the Congress party was "hand in gloves with the BJP... They are acting together to
scuttle the Parliamentary system. The two parties are made for each other".

Asking as to how the government could say it had no business to be conducted in Parliament, Dasgupta said several major issues like fake encounters, SEZ, FDI in retail, human trafficking, the fate of beedi workers and US Senators writing to the Prime Minister against the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, could not be discussed.

Maintaining that disruption of proceedings had become a "pastime" for MPs, he said even a party with three members was forcing adjournments. "I have never seen Ministers shouting from front benches... or a Congress Chief Whip seeking suspension of proceedings".

Pointing out that three bills were passed in 15 minutes in Lok Sabha on Monday, the CPI leader said "we have become laughing stock in front of the people. This is sure to take India to the path of dictatorship like Pakistan and Bangladesh and destroy our parliamentary system".

To questions on the Left role in the Presidential elections, the CPI leader said his party would like to have "a secular and democratic person, who is aware of his constitutional responsibilities".
