NEW DELHI: A non-resident Indian woman from the United States filed a complaint in a city court after the Delhi Police refused to register a case against a prominent businessman for allegedly duping her of Rs 55 million.

Nishi Malik, a widow and California resident, approached the Patiala House court through her lawyer alleging that businessman Ajay Singh duped her of the said amount after inducing her to invest in a shopping mall.

On court directions, a case was registered at the Connaught Place police station on Friday.

Singh, owner of Atlantic Multiplexes Ltd, resides at Teen Murti Marg, police said.

The complainant told the police that Singh, a friend of her deceased husband Kuldeep Malik, persuaded her to invest money to construct a shopping mall in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh on the basis of equal partnership.

"Singh also promised that he would allot 50 percent shares of the new project to me and the profit amount would also be shared equally," she alleged in the complaint.

Malik told the police through her lawyer that money was paid to Singh in installments over the last two years.

"We have registered a case of cheating against the businessman and investigations are underway to ascertain the allegations made by Malik through her lawyer," a senior investigating officer said.
