There has been a significant increase in the number of real estate-related cases in the first three months of 2007 as compared to corresponding period last year.

According to the statistics available, there were 693 cases registered in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Crime Branch in housing- related matters from January 1 to March 31.  Last year, the number was 545.

Police Commissioner DN Jadhav said, “With the real-estate boom at an all-time high, it is not surprising that cases related to the real estate are shooting up.” “Our officers in the EOW are well equipped and qualified to handle to situation. I am confident we will get maximum convictions in these cases,” Jadhav said.

Apart from housing, there has been an increase in the number of banking offences as well. At least 1820 banking-related cases were with the EOW compared to 928 cases in 2006.

While more than 1,500 offences of general cheating were registered this year which is more 1010 cases which were registered last year. A look at the number of cases also indicates that the number of economic offences had increased as compared to last year and the year before. This year there were more than 4000 cases registered in the first three months, while last year the number was 3000.

The total amount of money involved in the offences also runs into crores of rupees. However, there hasn’t been much recovery.

“Generally in economic offences, it takes a lot of time to recover the money because transactions are complex. Proving it in the court of law and recovering the money is a lengthy process,” a senior EOW official said. Seven people were arrested in three months while 18 people were arrested in the same period last year.
