Sensex regains 13K level, ends 321 points higher

Sensex which had gained almost 400 points in the past three trading sessions, climbed 321.66 points, or 2.5 per cent to close at 13,177.74.

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex surged strongly by a whopping 322 points as the upbeat mood gathered momentum on the back of across-the-board buying by operators as well as sustained global firmness.

The 30-share sensitive index recovered its last Monday's 617 point fall in the consecutive four-day rally.

The 30-share-index opened firm at 12,904.85 points and gradually moved upward to the intra-day high of 13,194.00 before ending the day at 13,177.74 from Thursday's close of 12,856.08 points, netting a rise of 321.66 points or 2.5 per cent.

The BSE bellwether has gained 722.37 points or 5.8 per cent in four straight trading sessions since April three.

The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also rallied sharply, ending at 3,843.50 points, a net rise of 91.50 points or 2.44 per cent over previous close of 3,752.00.

Operators aggressively covered short positions in the Futures and Options (F&O) before the earning season even as high interest rates and consistent inflation pressures remained the cause of concern, brokers said.

The market sentiment was well supported by a strong surge in Asia. Japan's Nikkei ended up by 1.48 per cent, China's Shanghai Composite Index by 2.27 per cent, Singapore's Strait Times by 1.62 per cent, South Korea's Kospi by 1.14 per cent and Taiwan's Weighted Index by 0.65 per cent.

IT major Infosys Technologies will announce Q4 results with its future guidance on April 13, which may provide direction for the market.

The rally was spread to all segments as all 11 sectoral indices closed with an average of 1.0 to 3.25 per cent rise.

The market breadth continued to be highly positive as 1,915 stocks gained while only 613 declined.

The trading volume remained very low at Rs 3,092.91 crore. Tata steel topped the list of highest traded securities with the turnover of Rs 133.48 crore followed by MindTree (Rs 99.85 crore), India Bull Real Estate (Rs 99.37 crore), IFCI (Rs 92.91 crore) and India Bulls (Rs 91.55 crore).

The broad-based BSE-100 index shot up by 166.65 points to 6,646.67 from previous close of 6,480.02.

The BSE-200 index and the Dollex-200 were quoted sharply higher at 1,570.86 and 608.78 at close compared to previous close of 1,532.39 and 591.18 respectively. The BSE-500 Index rallied smartly by 117.93 points to 4,997.61 from 4,879.68 and the Dollex-30 ended up at 2,518.37 from 2,445.79 previously.
