MUMBAI: The Chappell Way has finally reached a dead end in Indian cricket.

With senior players revolting against him, Greg Chappell, the cerebral and controversial coach of the Indian cricket team, has put in his papers.

Just two days before the BCCI in India was to review his performance following the team’s World Cup debacle, Chappell said enough is enough.

“I’ve informed the president of the BCCI that I would not seek an extension to my contract to coach the Indian cricket team for family and personal reasons,” Chappell said in a statement.

Chappell’s tenure with the Indian team – which he described in the letter as a challenging task – lasted  22 months. He was on contract for US $20,000 a month till the World Cup. Technically, his contract was to end on April 30.

Until two days ago Chappell was expressing his desire to continue if given a free hand. Cricket watchers believe Sachin’s interview may have forced his hand. Sachin and Chappell were allegedly not on talking terms for last few months. Greg said in his letter: “I am grateful to the players with whom I have worked... for the challenges they presented me with and which I tried to meet in a professional, methodical, and interesting way in the interests of the team and the individual.”

He also thanked his support staff, a member of which has been in the eye of the storm over the team’s non-performance. Some board members have questioned the role of assistant coach Ian Frazer. But Chappell said he could not have worked without his help.

“I would like to make special mention of my support staff without whom I would not have survived the rigours of the past 22 months. Ian Frazer and Greg King deserve special mention for their efforts as do John Gloster, S Ramakrishnan, and Ramesh Mane.”

Chappell also thanked his wife Judy who, he said, enjoyed India as much as he did.

He also had a word for the media with which he has shared a love-hate relationship: “To the media, my thanks also for constantly forcing me to question myself, my thinking, and the way I went about my job.”
