NEW DELHI: Mild tremors hit northern parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning, where people rushed out of their houses for safety.

There were no immediate reports of any casualty or loss to property.

The Met office said an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale shook parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh at 9:05 am.

"The earthquake had its epicentre in the Hind Kush mountains in Afghanistan," a Met official said. The Hind Kush is about 900 km from here.

Slight tremors were also felt in parts of the Capital. "The tremors were felt around 9 am and lasted for about five to six seconds," a resident of East Delhi said.

According to reports from Himachal Pradesh, the tremor was felt in the Chamba and Dharamshala regions of the state.

People in several parts of Punjab, including Chandigarh and Jalandhar also felt the tremors.

Panic gripped the residents of Uri and Tangdhar here as the memories of October 8, 2005 quake, which devastated the two border areas in the region, came alive following the tremors.

However, the officials said there was no report of loss to life or damage to property from anywhere in the valley so far.

"After feeling the shocks, we ran towards our lab, where we have installed the specially designed earthquake alarm, which was giving buzzer from 9.12 am," Prof Moiuddin, Director of B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology said.
