MUMBAI: Thirty eight-year-old police constable, Ravindra Sawant, who found himself transferred to the nondescript Local Arms Division-4 post at Sathe College to guard over rifles used by National Cadet Corps (NCC) on Wednesday morning, shot himself in the head with his 303 bore rifle within an hour of taking charge.

Sawant, who has been in the police force for the last 18 years, is survived by his wife and an eight-year-old son. Sawant’s nephew, Sagar said his uncle didn’t show any signs of stress the night before.

“On Tuesday night, since it was Ramnavami, our entire family went to see the Sai Bhandara procession at our Police Line colony in Bandra (west). We were awake throughout the night singing bhajans and prayers. Next morning, my uncle left for work as usual,” said Sagar.

However, the nephew added that his uncle had a history of mental illness. Additional commissioner of police (west region) Bipin Bihari said, “Five days prior to killing himself, Sawant was admitted to the Nagpada police hospital for treatment of acute flu. After being discharged on Sunday, he stayed at home for two days before reporting to duty at the Marol headquarters on Tuesday morning. He was to take up his new post at Sathe College on Wednesday.”

Moreover, Sawant’s brother Deepak told the police that his brother was under some mental stress in the recent past. Deepak, as well as another brother and the deceased were attached to the Mumbai police department.

The principal of Sathe College located in Vile Parle, Kavita Rege said, “We are keeping information about the suicide under wraps. We don’t want to distract our students, who are currently appearing for their final examinations. Constables are posted at the basement storage facility where the rifles used by NCC cadets for target practise are stored.”
