SRINAGAR: Snowfall continued to wreak havoc in Kashmir as four more died and around 33 houses caved-in during the past 24 hours.

Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Basharat Ahmad Dhar said one of three deceased died in Pulwama when a Chinar tree fell on him. Another died in Anantnag when he fell from the roof of his house and one more perished in the Budgam area.

According to reports, an air force jawan died while another was injured when the roof of their bunker collapsed due to the heavy snowfall.

“We’ve reports that more thirty houses have collapsed in Ganderbal, Anantnag and other parts of the valley,” Dhar said.

While Srinagar witnessed more than one feet of snow, Gulmarg recorded more than four feet. “There is likelihood of rain and heavy snowfall in the next 24 hours across J&K,” said TN Jotishi, director of the Kashmir meteorological department.

The Kashmir valley has been without power for the past two days as the snowfall has uprooted several electric poles and snapped high-tension wires.

Even hospital and other essential services are without electricity.

“We have restored the 220 KV Srinagar-Jammu line and hopefully, the power will be restored soon. Our priority is essential services like hospitals. We’ve been able to restore power to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of medical sciences and work is on to restore electricity in other hospitals,” Dhar added.

The Divisional commissioner also said that the snow-clearance operations are in full swing and major roads have already been cleared.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi yatra have also resumed since this afternoon in Katra, he added. “We’ve allowed the pilgrims to move on after the weather cleared a bit. The 15 pilgrims, who were taken ill, are also showing signs of improvement,” said Puneet Kumar, additional CEO of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
