The residents of Bhimwadi in Wadala spilled over to the streets, to protest the custodial death of their neighbour, Vinayak Chandulkar. The 36-year-old died in police custody at the Wadala police lock-up on Sunday night, by hanging himself by his shirt in the toilet. His body was found hanging by the window, police said. The cops were on the streets, armed with their helmets, as tension increased in the area after the word spread around.

According to a relative, Ratna Maurya, the post mortem report states that Chadulkar suffered injuries on his groin and neck.

Chandulkar, a carpenter by profession was arrested on Sunday afternoon, after a neighbour complained to the police that that he was physically abusing his wife.

He was arrested under Section 151 (CrPC) and put police lock-up as a preventive measure. At around 6.30p.m, an accused, who was locked in the same lock-up, informed the cops that Chandulkar had hung himself. However, the relatives accuse the police of torture which may have resulted in his death. “The police beat him up and killed him. They are lying to us and are weaving up stories,” said an inconsolable Sangita, Chandulkar’s wife.

Their two children — a daughter aged 11 and a son aged 5 — are studying in Chiplun village. The body was sent to KEM hospital for a panchnama and to JJ hospital for the post-mortem. “It was a usual domestic fight. My husband is not brave enough to commit suicide. I’m doomed,” said Sangita. According to the police, when they found Chandulkar hanging in the toilet, they rushed him to the KEM Hospital. He was declared dead before admission.

“A magisterial enquiry will be conducted, since it is a custodial death. The Crime Branch will investigate the case. If there is any foul-play, strict action will be taken against the guilty,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Zone) YP Dhoom. This is the fourth time in the past two years that Chandulkar was detained under the preventive section — Section 151. “He was a drunkard and suspected his wife’s fidelity. They used to have frequent fights,” said senior PI, Wadala, Kader Khan.
