The dead baby found at Ramgiri Paradise Society in the plush Shivaji Park area, police said, was three hours old when thrown from the building — and she was thrown down from the seventh floor of the building, the police added.

“According to our investigations, the girl was thrown from the seventh floor,” said deputy commissioner of police Dynaneshwar Phadtare. “We have registered a case of murder at the Shivaji Park police station. The body has been sent to Sion Hospital for post-mortem and we will conduct DNA tests. It will help us to find out the parents.”

He added, “We will interrogate the building’s residents and guards.” The police are also checking out delivery reports, which happened on Thursday, from nearby hospitals.

The residents of Ramgiri Paradise on Gokhale Road, Dadar are still reeling from the shock of a newborn being found near their building on Thursday night.

The building, with security only at its back entrance, has 22 flats and is patrolled by two watchmen, in shifts. Anil Gosalkar, watchman of  ‘A’ wing, first saw the baby and alerted the residents.

“The watchmen are supposed to sit next to the lift only. The backgate and the gate before the lift are locked at night. I did not notice any resident who was pregnant. An outsider could have left the baby in the parking lot,” said Balkrishna Jadhav, another watchman.

Vaishali Karad, a B wing resident, said, “It is not possible for any resident of our building to commit such an act. Most residents have been living in this building for many years.”

The residents are angry with the police for conducting late night searches in the building without the presence of a lady constable or
officer.

Member of Parliament Mohan Rawle stated, “At around 11pm, when I returned to my apartment, residents complained that the police were conducting searches without a search warrant. There was no lady constable in their team, which is a breach of rules.”

He ridiculed the police plan to conduct DNA tests on the residents.
