MUMBAI: Kolkata is coming closer to Mumbai. Just days after getting a surprise ODI, the Eden Gardens is all set to get back its share of the Board’s pie too. The new president seems to be bringing in new fortune for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Sources in Kolkata and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have confirmed that the financial sanctions imposed on CAB last year will soon be lifted. The decision could come as soon as Wednesday when the Board’s working committee meets in New Delhi.

“I’ve spoken to the BCCI. The Board will discuss the issue at the working committee,” new CAB president Prasun Mukherjee told DNA. His aide and CAB official Gautam Dasgupta was even more confident. “What I understand is that the announcement will be made after the meeting on February 7,” he said.

When contacted, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah virtually confirmed the news. “There are two types of sanctions — TV revenue share and tournament subsidy. We’ll have to see. If the members agree, we may do it,” he said.

The sanctions were imposed on CAB to recover the money to the tune of Rs 47 crore allegedly misappropriated by its former president Jagmohan Dalmiya from the Pilcom accounts. Dalmiya, one may recall, was eventually suspended and expelled from the Board.

Meanwhile, the Eden Gardens is readying for the big occasion. It will be for the first time in over two decades that an international would be staged without Jagmohan Dalmiya in the thick of things. In fact, he may be conspicuous by his absence during the February 8 ODI between India and Sri Lanka.

“I’ve not decided whether I’ll go to the match,” Dalmiya told DNA. Mukherjee, however, said he would invite his predecessor, who had to relinquish office after the December 17 SGM decision on his expulsion.

Mukherjee has also revealed that the CAB has invited all the BCCI officials and Board president Sharad Pawar has accepted the invite. “We’ve not received any communication but the president has promised to be there for the match,” Mukherjee said, adding: “So also all the members of the Board.”

Dalmiya, deserted even by his erstwhile colleagues in the CAB, challenged the expulsion in the Kolkata High Court. The case is likely to come up for hearing in two days.
