Given the track record of independent corporators, Shiv Sena is now all set to rule TMC for the third consecutive term.
Despite tall talks of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), about coming to power in Thane, Shiv Sena once again emerged as the single largest party. Shiv Sena bagged 48 seats, BJP 5, NCP 25, Congress 16 and independents and others 22.
The tally of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) fell to 5 from the 14, it won last time. NCP, which had fielded candidates on 109 seats, suffered a loss of only 1 seat. The number of Congress corporators has gone up to 16 from 13.
The results are encouraging for Shiv Sena, as after support from BJP and its traditional independent supporters, the party is short of just three corporators to achieve the magic figure of 59 corporators.
Though the municipal elections in Thane went off peacefully, sporadic incidents of violence were reported in the city when results were declared on February 2.
In one incident, supporters of Congress candidate Bhaskar Shetty and Harishchandra Patil clashed when Patil took out victory rally in Nalpada.
Patil was expelled from the Congress for six years for allegedly filing nomination on bogus a AB form.
Patil won the elections and took out a victory rally. When the rally reached Shetty’s office, his supporters threw stones and glass bottles on the rally. Patil’s supporters also retaliated, resulting in high tension in the area.
