The distribution of the compensation amount is resulting in family feuds

KOLKATA: In a curious turn to the West Bengal government's decision to provide huge compensation to farmers, who are willing to sell off their lands in Singur, a new problem seems to be fast cropping up.

The sudden decision has resulted in numerous complaints about family feuds over the distribution of the compensation amount. Scores of villagers are flocking the panchayats and the local police station every day with their problems. Though, in most cases, the panchayat is successful in resolving the conflicts, there are ample situations when the police have to intervention.

Take Pratima Haldar's case. The 62-year-old widow has been staying in Singur with her step-son. She officially received the compensation cheque after her husband died. But immediately after receiving the amount, she decided to leave Singur and move to her own son in Delhi. Her step-son has now filed a criminal complaint against her alleging a cheating offense.

The Samanta family at Khasher Bheri mouja in Singur is similarly witnessing regular fights over an equal distribution of the compensation amount. Each of the three brothers is claiming a lion's share citing contribution towards ploughing the land. All the three are pleading with the panchayat for justice.

The case of Majhi family at Bajemelia mouja is even more complicated. The father and the son are fighting over the proper utilisation of the compensation amount. Paran Majhi, the father, being a conservative person, prefers depositing the entire money in the bank.

However, his son, Paltu, is in favour of starting a new business and purchase luxury items. The panchayat, however, solved the problem by mediating an equal distribution between the fixed deposit and the purchase of luxury goods.
