UJJAIN: An eight-year-old boy died after falling into an over 200-foot borewell despite efforts by the district administration of Ujjain-Ratlam to save him.

Kalu Singh was trapped after he fell into the well at Baramadkheda village in Antarvasia on Saturday.

The boy was pulled out of the well early on Sunday but died before he could be administered treatment, Ujjain's Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad said.

A parallel trench was dug by the authorities to save the boy, but the efforts proved futile as his condition worsened during the night.

When no water was found in the borewell, which was dug a few days back, it was abandoned after being covered with a jute cloth.

Kalu slipped in while playing near it. On hearing his screams, his mother raised an alarm, after which people gathered to save the child.

Later, a rescue team from Ujjain reached the spot and a parallel trench was dug beside the well till a depth of 40 feet. Later, the well and the trench were connected to rescue the child, but the measure came too late.
