Beckham promises he'll consider playing in Japan

Former England captain David Beckham ate sushi for the cameras and even said he may play in Japan one day as he went all out on a flying promotional tour to Tokyo.

TOKYO: Former England captain David Beckham ate sushi for the cameras and even said he may play in Japan one day as he went all out on a flying promotional tour to Tokyo.

It was the seventh and shortest visit to Japan by the celebrity footballer since he first came in 1997 as a member of Manchester United.

Beckham, who flew in by private jet for a 14-hour stay, dutifully used disposable wooden chopsticks when a presenter for Fuji television confronted him with a plate of cucumber sushi rolls.

"When I go out for dinner, Japanese food is one of my favorites," Beckham assured.

When begged to play some day in Japan, the the 31-year-old Real Madrid midfielder said, "Maybe one day, because I played in England, I played for Real Madrid for many years."

"You know, who knows what can happen in the future?" he said.

Beckham complimented the level of the sport in Japan, a top baseball nation that suffered a mauling in the football World Cup in Germany.

On whether Japanese football was improving, Beckham said, "Without a doubt."

"The difference from 10 years ago is so much greater now," he said.

Beckham had been greeted by mobs of fans on some previous visits, but his star power has faded in two years.

He was in Japan to promote US cellular operator Motorola, which has signed him as its "global brand ambassador".
