NEW DELHI: Tihar’s high-profile inmates have resolved to leave jail early in the New Year.

But unlike, say, giving up cigarettes, the future of the resolution made by Shibu Soren, former Union minister and murder convict; Santosh Singh Yadav, Priyadarshini Mattoo’s rapist and killer; Manu Sharma, convicted of Jessica Lall’s murder; Vikas Yadav, awaiting trial in the Nitish Katara murder case; and RK Sharma, accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case will depend on factors more complicated than will power.

“When we spoke to them, their unanimous resolution for the New Year was to get out of jail either on bail or through parole,” a jail official said. “They are all confident that they will get out.”

Perhaps aware that there are slim chances of the VIP convicts finding expeditious liberty, jail authorities have arranged for some engaging distractions.

On December 31, Punjabi pop singer Mika, he of the Rakhi Sawant smooch fame, is scheduled to perform in the jail. The menu will accommodate pulao, paneer delicacies, and halwa to placate celebratory cravings.

But a solemn observance has been added to the programme to make the prisoners appreciate their situation. “The criminals will observe a two-minute silence for all those who suffered because of them, and also for their relatives,” said Sunil Gupta, Tihar’s public relations officer. “The inmates will also sing bhajans.”

In fact, Sushil Sharma, convicted in the Naina Sahni case, has achieved some renown among the inmates as a singer and will present a bhakti song. “Others can participate in whichever way they like,” said Gupta. “We open the forum for prisoners to express their talent.”
