NEW DELHI: When Orissa DGP BB Mohanty’s son jumped parole in Jaipur and disappeared, it made headlines. Yet at Tihar jail in Delhi, there are forty-four convicts who have jumped parole and disappeared over the past six years.

The officials of the Tihar jail have submitted an affidavit in the Delhi High Court that the police needs to trace these prisoners. Interestingly, all those jumping parole were sentenced to life terms in murder cases.

“These people apply for interim bail or for parole and never come back. We have been telling the Delhi police that they need to take strict action but this is our way of reminding them,” said an official at Tihar.

Tihar’s authorities submitted the affidavit on December 19 following an order of the High Court on December 12, seeking detailed information on the prisoners who jumped parole.

Earlier, hearing a case, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Arun Suresh had ordered Tihar authories to furnish details on what steps need to been taken to get the convicts back in prison.

“We are told that there is no further coordination between the jail authorities and the police to find out whether steps have been taken to apprehend the convict,” the court had stated in its order. “Under these circumstances, we would like to know what steps have taken by the concerned authorities to apprehend the present appellant,” the court asked.
