Jostling for space to catch a glimpse of Munnabhai, the crowd went berserk. Mediapersons scurried themselves to get better frames for their footage. It was judgment day for Sanjay Dutt on Tuesday. One of the most-awaited verdicts in recent times was delivered amid tight security.

The 47-year-old actor arrived at TADA court at 11.00a.m along with sister Namrata and Maharashtra Minister of State for Civil Supplies Baba Siddique.

Through the afternoon, when judge PD Kode was delivering the verdict, the public speculated. “He should be acquitted. He’s my favourite actor,” said Imtiyaz Shaikh, a college student, here to catch a glimpse of his fave star.

Kunika Gaurav, a friend, stood outside the court till the proceedings finished, offering silent prayers for his acquittal,  “He is a good friend. I’m here to express my support to him.” Gaurav  sported a red tikka, wore a white salwar kameez and sunglasses.

According to Suresh Malde, an ardent fan, who follows Dutt each time the court summons him, Dutt visited the Siddhivinayak and Mahalaxmi temples before coming to court. “He may have gone to seek the divine blessings of the Amighty. He’s a god-fearing man,” said Malde.

After the verdict, Dutt walked out, hanging his head and got into a waiting car. He refused to turn around, despite cries from public and media both.

“We are happy for him,” said brother-in-law Kumar Gaurav, before zooming away. The stalls and shops around the Arthur Road prison made brisk business as they happily catered to the swelling public.

“I hope Dutt is summoned every day. My business booms,” said Anil Tawde, a tea-stall owner, in a lighter vein.
