JOHANNESBURG: The MTN ODI series between India and South Africa was off to a damp start as the first match of the five-match series was called off after rain ruled out any play. The teams were scheduled to play a 20-over-a-side game but it was ruled out by a heavy downpour in the evening. The teams now proceed to Durban for the 2nd ODI which will be held on Wednesday. It also will be a day-night game.

Earlier in the day, the umpires inspected the ground and scheduled an inspection at 7.15 local time (10.45 IST) but they advanced the inspection by 30 minutes as there was no rain in the period.

The organizers even declared that there would be a 20-over game. But even as the covers were coming out, it started raining and the match was called off at 6.30 pm local time (10 pm IST). A 20-over game would have given the Indians some sort of an appetizer as the the team is scheduled to play its first official game of the shortest version on December 1.

Meanwhile there was excitement at the stadium as a packed house at the Wanderers cheered every movement of the officials and the umpires. Every time, the umpires came to the field, they were given a standing ovation. The stadium resembled any Indian centre as there more Indian flags than South African.

The Wanderers Stadium is hosting the first match since the world record chase by the home team against Australia in March this year. Given the prevailing, weather conditions, it is likely that this may not be the last match that could be rain affected.
