Imrana to face defamation suit

Imrana whose father-in-law was convicted of raping her is facing a defamation suit filed by her sister-in-law.

MUZAFFARNAGAR: In her continued legal battles, Imrana whose father-in-law was convicted of raping her is facing a defamation suit filed by her sister-in-law.

A local court has fixed November 6 for hearing the statement of Imrana's sister-in-law Muhazra Begum, who has filed a case claiming Imrana that alleged all the daughters-in-law of Ali Mohammed were raped by him.

Munazra filed the defamation case under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code relating to defamation and Imrana could face a jail term of two years if the charges are proved.

District and Sessions Judge RD Nimesh on October 19 convicted Mohammed of raping 29-year-old Imrana of Charthawal village in this district.

He gave Mohammed, 70, a 10-year prison term and directed him to pay compensation of Rs 8,000 to Imrana for raping her, besides sentencing him to three years in prison and imposing a fine of Rs 3,000 for criminal intimidation.

His counsel Subash Arora said an appeal would be filed in the Allahabad High Court against the verdict.

In the wake of the rape conviction, Muslim clerics said Nur Ilahi should immediately leave his wife Imrana.

Imrana, however, has continued to live with her husband and five children at her parents' house in Kukra village in defiance of the fatwas by a local community panchayat and clerics declared the marriage void.
