Police claim they have thwarted Delhi terror attack

NEW DELHI: On the eve of Diwali, police on Friday said they had foiled a major terrorist plot to carry out bomb blasts in the capital by arresting a Jaish-e-Mohammad militant with three kilograms of RDX.
    
Pervez Ahmed Radoo alias Raju landed in police net on October 14 when he arrived in the capital with the explosives along with a pencil timer and a detonator, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said.

 

The militant, who was arrested near the Azadpur fruit market, was to deliver the explosives to a Jaish module that was planning to strike terror in the capital during Diwali, he said.

 

"They wanted to carry out a blast before Diwali. We are still looking for the module. But as of now we have foiled their plan," Singh said.

 

A post-graduate in Zoology, the 29-year-old resident of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir had procured the explosives from Pune, where he was staying till 2003, Singh said.

 

He was working for the chief of JeM in Srinagar identified as Sherjil, he added.

 

Police also recovered Rs 10 lakh and a Matrix-like coded-language material used by the Pakistan-based terror outfit for communication.

 

During interrogation, Pervez told police that he started working for Jaish in 2002 after coming into contact with Ghulam Rasool, who had set up a base in Pune. Rasool was killed in an encounter with Kashmir J&K in April 2006.
