NEW DELHI: The Union government is contemplating having common entrance examination for the six national law institutes in the country.

Prompted by a case in the Supreme Court, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry is exploring the options of having joint entrance exams similar to IIT-JEE, CAT and PMT.

The ministry has called a meeting of Directors of National Law Institutes in Bangalore, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kolkata and Gandhinagar on Thursday in this regard. Directors of IIT and CBSE chairman will also be a part of the meeting, which would explore the options of streamlining the entrance examination pattern.

Set up in 1986-87 under the State Act, these national law institutes have different syllabus and timing for their entrance examinations. But, with exam dates clashing, the students are left with fewer options.

Having a common entrance examination has been a long standing demand of the students.
