The Shiv Sena planned to trigger riots in Thane on Saturday, alleged two Congress corporators at a press conference attended by Revenue Minister Narayan Rane.

Alleging that the move was foiled by alert Congress workers, the two corporators,  Ravi Rao and Ravi Pathak, said, “We got information that some Sainiks had planted a picture of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray with his face blackened in Gandhi Garden. We then alerted the town police station. The police immediately confiscated the photo and a big trouble was averted.”

Asked why would Shiv Sainiks disrespect their topmost leader, the Congressmen said, “It became crystal clear to Sena leaders that they were losing the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) elections scheduled on Saturday. Probably, they wanted to get the polling cancelled.”

Alleging the conspiracy could have been hatched up at the instance of executive president Uddhav Thackeray, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane said, “This is nothing, but a repetition of earlier incident at Shivaji Park, where Thackeray’s late wife’s statue was desecrated. I am still firm on my allegation that it was the handiwork of  Sainiks only. After his mother now, he did the same thing to his father. To gain political mileage, he is not even sparing his parents.”

The Revenue Minister congratulated the Thane police for acting in time and averting a riot in Thane. However, the Thane police feigned ignorance.

D Sivanandan, Thane Commissioner of Police, told DNA that no such  incident was brought to his notice by his officers. Sivanandan said, “I deny having knowledge of any such incident or seizure as mentioned.”

When contacted the officer in-charge at town police station said, “The police had confiscated some posters of  Bal Thackeray on Friday night as a security measure. But the pictures or posters were not blackened. There is no formal complaint either by anyone.”
